That’s all the news for today guys, so until next time, thanks for stopping by.
Some clever people have figured out how to make the Nintendo DS do all sorts of wonderful things and turning your console into a virtual iPod is just one of them. It’s a relatively simple process but before we go any further let’s complete a checklist of all the things you’ll need.
1. Nintendo DS.
2. A PC with Internet Access.
3. Loads of songs in .mp3 format on your PC.
4. R4 DS Adaptor.
5. SD card.
6. Adaptor which allows the SD card to hook up to your PC.
7. Software already installed onto your DS to allow the R4 cartridge to work.
For more information about R4 adaptors and SD cards do a search on Google - the software mentioned in point 7 should be provided with the product.
Hopefully all this stuff will already make sense to you and you just want to get on with turning your DS into an iPod.
So let’s get down to business, the process takes around 10 minutes and you start by taking the R4 cartridge out of your DS, and then you take out the small (micro) SD card out of the R4 and put it (the SD card) into an adaptor which allows connectivity with your PC.
Once you have got your SD card hooked up to your computer it will appear as a folder on your desktop.
So far so good, now the next step is to search Google for ‘LMP-ng’ - this is a music player for the Nintendo DS which was created by Lick (LMP stands for Lick Music Player) and ‘Lick’ is the person who invented the iPod software for the Nintendo DS.
Type in ‘Lick LMP’ in Google - it’s the first once you’ve found the page search for the latest ‘Stable’ version, this simply means that the application is up to date and has no problems.
Do not download any of the unstable versions, even if they are more recent as they will not work.
Once you have found a suitable version, download it onto your desktop following the usual prompts until the download begins.
When the files are on your desktop, create a new folder and give it the title ‘iPod’ then drag your freshly downloaded files into this new folder.
Now remember right back at the beginning of this article when you had inserted your SD Card into your PC via an adaptor?
Well now is the time to search for it on your PC and drag the newly created iPod folder into it.
Once this is done take out the SD card from your PC/adaptor and insert it back into your R4 cartridge, then put the R4 cartridge back into your Nintendo DS console.
Turn your DS on and select the folder entitled ‘iPod’, you will be asked if you want to save the file answer ‘yes’ and then a replica of the famous iPod design should appear on the two screens of the DS.
The top screen displays all the information such as Playlists, Artists, and Albums etc whilst the lower screen in true DS style takes care of the functions .
You will probably notice sometime around now that there is no music on the iPod, so this is what you do…turn off the DS, take the SD card out of the R4 again and basically retrace the steps you made at the start of the process, i.e. hook up your SD card to your PC .
Once you have done that you can drag and drop your music into the iPod folder that you created earlier, you don’t need to create any more folders (although if you are the highly organized type you can do) and the music can be dropped in from iTunes or elsewhere so long as it is .mp3 format.
Once the songs are installed in the iPod folder take the SD card/adaptor out of the PC and put it back into the R4 cartridge exactly like you did before and re-insert it back into your DS.
On your DS Select iPod again, press A to select and look on in wonder as you realise all your songs are now on your DS….or should that be your Nintendo virtual iPod.
Aaron Lewis is a music and DS nut job his favourite DS game is Mario Kart (whilst listening to music at the same time). He owns a Colbat/Blue DS which is never far from his side.
Want one of those yourself? Whether it’s a Pink DS or Limited Edition Guitar Hero Bundle you’re after Nintendo DS Stockists is the place to go.
There are several Nintendo DS Stock Trackers to help you track down the colour DS of your choice plus you’ll find a wide range of Nintendo DS related news, games and articles too.
